Chinese Netizens Hurt At Cruel Treatment Of Dog In Hubei
Program Code: 0909346160505007 Source: Weibo
Chinese social media users are outraged by online photos and videos of a stray dog crushed by an electric car at a university in central China’s Hubei Province.
The dog cruelty case happened on April 18 in Hubei University of Technology. A netizen posted photos on Weibo and said:
A stray dog was playing with a basketball on the playground. Later the school security drove a car, crushing the dog four times to death.
A student surnamed Xie told Beijing Youth Daily that he saw a dog chasing the basketball and biting one when he was having a sports lesson on the playground in the morning.
He said:
We were afraid that the dog would bite other balls so we kept the balls in our hands. Then the dog started to chase the balls in students' hands.
Later, some student called the school security to turf the dog out. Two security guards failed to drive away the dog. Then they drove an electric vehicle to the playground and started hitting the dog.
"Many students tried to stop the security guards when they heard the dog shrieking," Xie added.
The dog was taken away by the guards.
The dog was still alive then. But nobody knows whether it is anymore alive or not .
The case sparked widespread anger. Many netizens shared the photos and accused the guards of cruelty. Famous Chinese actress Sun Li also fulminated against the act and called for "respecting life."
On April 20 noon, the security department of the involved university posted a statement on its official Weibo account, expressing regret and apology to dog lovers.
It said:
At around 11am on April 18, the security department received a report of a large stray dog biting balls on the playground and chasing students having sports lessons. It seriously disturbed the normal school order and threatened the safety of the teachers and students.
When the security guards arrived at the scene, they found the dog was large, looked ferocious and had bitten several balls. They tried to drive away the dog with three electric bicycles at first but the dog barked at the staff. The security guards failed despite using other tricks. Finally, they drove the patrol car to hit the dog.
According to the regulations of raising a dog in Wuhan, the teaching area in school is forbidden for dogs. We are sorry for the improper action that hurt the feelings of many dog lovers. But the situation was really urgent at that time. We have learned a lesson and will devise better ways to deal with the stray dogs in the future.
