A woman in southwest China’s Chongqing city was humbugged by fraudster into pouring coke into two ATMs to get her money back, causing damage valued up to 60,000 yuan (US$8,690), Chongqing Evening News reported.
The woman from Guangxi Province received a phone call saying she had 1,300 yuan in overdue telephone charges in November last year. She was told on the phone the problem may have been caused by her identity card being misused.
She was told transfer money to a certain bank account to prevent any further misuse of her bank cards. She transferred 5,300 yuan to the designated account.
She felt suspicious the next day and wanted to get her money back. She contacted the caller and was told to pour coke into the ATM for a receipt and she could retrieve her money by showing the receipt to local police.
She poured coke into the outlet of an ATM but it didn’t work, as a bank monitor showed. Then she went to another bank to do the same thing.
Local police received reports from the bank saying someone pouring coke into ATMs as some kind of mischief. They caught the woman on May 6.
Local police are investigating the fraud. They said how much the woman should pay for the damage of ATM would depend on the final investigation results.
