Airbnb now has its Chinese name
AIRBNB, the hospitality exchange service provider, gave itself a new Chinese name today, representing the firm’s ambition to expand into the Chinese market.
The new name is Aibiying, literally means “loving each other”, which echoes Airbnb’s features as enabling people to lease or rent short-term lodging. Airbnb’s official WeChat accounts have adopted the new Chinese name already.
Airbnb, which steals would-be hotel customers from traditional hotel owners, together with Uber, is among the most popular sharing economy stars globally now.
Brian Chesky, co-founder of Airbnb, said during his visit to China yesterday the company would expand into the Chinese market through the new localized name, media reported today.
At present, Airbnb has already offered Chinese-language webpage and local payment services to woo Chinese consumers, including AliPay.
But the new name Aibiying is difficult to pronounce and remember in the local language, netizens said in the social media today.
