Alipay to scrutinize new social networking function after excessively exposed photos uploaded cause stir

ALIBABA'S popular application Alipay said today it will strengthen scrutiny after its new social networking function creates a place for “provocative” networking.

Alipay pledges to remove excessively exposed photos and postings on some of its new social media discussion groups.
The online discussion groups are among the new social networking features the application unveiled over the weekend, which allows interaction among strangers who share something in common, ranging from fitness, pets, wealth management or online game, and allows users with high credits to give “tips,” or small amounts of payments, to postings they like.
On one online discussion group that entitled “logs of school girls”, some postings are photos with little clad young women accompanied by provocative comments that are meant to attract "tips" from followers. On another group featuring fitness, some photos with similar styles can be found.
It has sparked controversy on China's social media, with some saying that the online payment system has become a place to find "hookers".
Alipay said in an official statement today that the new feature is still in the testing stage and the company vows to take timely measures to filter and deal with illegal and malicious information based on its strong big-data management capacity.
"As an open platform, Alipay's social networking feature hopes to facilitate interaction and communication among its users while creating values for our partners in the field," it said, adding that there are many more discussion groups with topics ranging from fitness, pets, wealth management and online gaming.
Alipay is China's third most popular mobile app, following WeChat and QQ.
