AmCham Shanghai celebrates its 100th anniversary
THE American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai celebrated its 100th anniversary yesterday, promising to stay committed to supporting and growing American business in Shanghai and beyond as their original founders did.
Robert Theleen, chairman of the board of governors at AmCham Shanghai, said the association has worked to support healthy commercial ties between the United States and China for a century.
"We are proud of the contributions American companies have made to China's economic development," Theleen said.
AmCham Shanghai President Kenneth Jarrett said that the association will help further deepen economic ties between the two countries.
"As we enter the next century of AmCham Shanghai's development, we are aware of an entirely new dimension of our work -- supporting investment from China into the US," Jarrett said. "We embrace this change, and will continue to work tirelessly to enable the success of our members and strengthen US-China commercial relations."
Over the last four decades alone, bilateral trade has expanded from a meager US$4.7 million in 1971 to an astonishing US$592 billion in 2014, an increase of 125,957 times, according to AmCham Shanghai.
AmCham Shanghai was founded 100 years ago by 45 American businessmen during a meeting on the creation of an association that would promote the interests of American companies in China. The provisional committee included representatives from industry giants such as American Steel, Standard Oil, Singer Sewing and Dollar Shipping.
Today, AmCham Shanghai has over 3,700 members, while corporate membership includes new icons like Apple, FedEx and Starbucks.
