Bank card for the young

CHINA Merchants Bank today issued a credit card together with JD Finance as part of the bank's efforts to expand presence among the younger generation backed by JD's credit system.

Under the cooperation, CMB will be able to determine credit card limit for young and first-time credit card applicant with the help of credit record collected by JD Finance, a subsidiary of e-commerce giant JD.com.

The bank also tries to appeal to young users by offering benefits and discounts covering purchase of goods, tourism, and education when they make consumption through JD.com.

Wang Yu, assistant general manager at credit card center of CMB, said young people between 18 to 30 years old amount to 70 percent of the bank's total 40 million credit card users.

The proportion is expected to grow as 80 percent of new credit card holders the bank acquired each year are below 30 years old.

CMB has extended a total 1 trillion yuan (US$147 billlion) credit for credit card users in the past 15 years, of which 80 percent was allocated to the young people, Wang added.
