China Telecom appoints new chairman

China Telecom, the country's third-largest mobile carrier, appointed a new chairman today after former chairman resigned amid investigation.

Yang Jie, former China Telecom's general manager, was appointed as chairman of the carrier with more than 200 million mobile users. Yang Xiaowei, former vice general manager, was appointed as new general manager.

Chang Xiaobing, former China Telecom's chairman, resigned after he was "suspected of serious violation of discipline" in December, according to the industry watchdog, which didn't give out final investigation results.

Chang, who used to work in China Unicom for several years before the appointment of China Telecom, was investigated mainly by the corruption problems during his career in China Unicom, industry insiders said.

China Telecom's new leaders were promoted from internal positions, instead of appointing external leaders, represented China Telecom was not deep involved in Chang's case, analysts said.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom are three giant state-owned firms. Their leaders are appointed directly by central government.

The carrier will develop 4G and broadband users in future.

By the end of 2016, it plans to develop totally 100 million 4G users, almost doubling the 58.5 million a year ago.
