China Unicom ambitious in IPTV under the partnership with BesTV
CHINA Unicom aims to grab more market shares in the booming IPTV (Internet protocol TV) market in Shanghai, with unique features like 4K content broadcast, video conference and unique contents, the country’s No. 2 carrier said yesterday.
China Unicom has cooperated with Shanghai-based BesTV to offer consumers upgraded services, covering super high-definition 4K broadcasting, video communications among handsets and smart TVs and high quality video contents like Disney films and UK soccer matches.
IPTV services and various video services are “new hopes” of telecommunications carriers, which are facing rivals like WeChat on traditional voice and short message services, said Dai Ling, Shanghai Unicom’s vice general manager.
Shanghai retains its No.1 ranking in China’s IPTV market when its user base hits more than 3 million by the end of 2016, said BesTV.
Besides 4K video services, audiences are able to take advantage of the boom in interactive IPTV features covering video on demand and value-added services like TV shopping.
China Unicom's move will challenge leading position of China Telecom on IPTV and broadband services. But more players will push the technology upgrade and market development, industry insiders said.
