China headed for 807m 5G users by 2025

China will have 807 million 5G users by 2025, accounting for almost half the country’s total mobile and leading the world in the new technology.

Local carriers are expected to invest 1.29 trillion yuan (US$184.3 billion) by 2025, mobile communications industry association GSMA said yesterday.

China has unique advantages in 5G, including equipment, industrial Internet and a huge market, industry officials told an online forum held by GSMA. “China is leading early adoption in 5G and has already built more than 160,000 5G base stations covering more than 50 cities as operators aim to expand standalone 5G network coverage and capacity,” said Sihan Bo Chen, head of China, GSMA.

“Unlocking the benefits of these next-generation networks, flexible policies, including for spectrum and infrastructure, are strategically important to support China’s ongoing transformation into a fully fledged digital economy,” she said.

Although the penetration of 5G connections grew quickly to 47 percent, 4G will still cover 53 percent of the country’s mobile connections by 2025.

China’s mobile Internet users will grow to 1.17 billion, accounting for 78 percent of the population by 2025.

The country’s total connections of Internet of Things will grow from 3.63 billion in 2019 to 8.01 billion in 2025.

The low-cost and rich variety of 5G models and wide applications of 5G will boost its development in China, said Wang Jianzhou, a senior adviser at GSMA who is also the former chairman of China Mobile.

Leading vendors such as Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Realme all launched a range of 5G models in the first quarter of this year.

Realme will start selling its latest model, the X50 Pro 5G, as its first 5G flagship model today.

With dual-model 5G support, super-fast charging and a 64-mega-pixel rear camera, prices are set to begin at 3,599 yuan (US$510).
