Chinese train maker proves its worth in Rio

As soccer fans from all over the world gather in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup, they might just use some Metro trains that were made in China.

More than 100 trains made by China CNR Co Lt are serving Rio de Janeiro’s subway system. One of the lines leads to Maracana Stadium, the biggest stadium in Brazil and site of the World Cup final on July 13.

“Given the enthusiasm of soccer fans, the doors and windows of the Metro trains were specially designed,” said the manufacturer.

Polycarbonate materials were used instead of glass on doors and windows due to safety concerns.

“The windows can’t be broken even when excited fans throw rocks at the trains,” said Wang Yongzhi, CNR’s chief engineer.

The company recently sent a 60-member team to Brazil to ensure smooth operation of the Chinese made trains during the World Cup.

“Our train has been warmly welcomed by Brazilian commuters since they were first introduced to their network two years ago,” Wang said. “Our trains are neat and tidy and are equipped with air conditioning, unlike some other trains on the network.”
