City vows more input for research and innovation
SHANGHAI will invest more in research and innovation, establish a city-level industrial research center, provide more financial support for strategic industries, and upgrade industrial structure, Mayor Han Zheng said today.
In 2011, Shanghai's total research and development spending reached 59.77 billion yuan (US$9.48 billion), up 24 percent year-on-year and accounting for 3.1 percent of the city's gross domestic product, Han said.
Shanghai is one of the leading Chinese cities on research and innovation, said Vice Minister of Science Wang Zhigang at a meeting held in the city today.
"But Shanghai will face challenge if we don't take new measures to spur innovation," said Yu Zhengsheng, the city's Party secretary.
Compared with other cities, Shanghai still lacks top-tier technology firms with an annual income of more than 100 billion yuan, such as Sina.com and 360buy.com in Beijing, Huawei, ZTE and Tencent in Shenzhen.
