Competition for jobs is rising again
Competition among job seekers remains fierce this spring, according to a new study from recruiting company Zhaopin.com.
The national talent competition index, the number of applications received per positions published, was 46.3 in the first quarter — which means 46 people are vying for each vacancy. The index rose by 11.8 points month on month, but fell one point year on year.
As a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the total number of job postings and applications fell fin the quarter from the same period last year.
State-owned enterprises recorded the highest competition index (76.0), followed by listed companies (56.1) and joint ventures (44.6).
Demand from privately owned enterprises and small businesses contracted significantly, as they have been hit hardest by the pandemic.
Beijing ranked first among the 38 major cities monitored — at 120.2. Shanghai ranked fourth, at 61.3.
Of the top five local industries, the Internet/e-commerce sector had the highest competition level, followed by banking and the real estate, construction, building materials and engineering sector.
