Continental teams up Shanghai-based NIO
GERMAN auto parts supplier Continental signed a cooperation framework agreement with NIO, a shanghai-based electric vehicle startup, in Germany last night in coincidence with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang’s visit of the country.
The two companies plan to work in the fields of electric vehicles, intelligent transportation systems and automated driving.
“China is one of the leading markets for electric vehicles. Our collaboration with NIO will contribute to further advance the development of electric vehicles and the Chinese electric vehicle market,” said Elmar Degenhart, chairman and executive board of Continental.
Under the agreement, Continental and NIO will collaborate on technologies such as wireless charging, automated driving, digital cockpit, next-generation brake systems and air suspension systems.
Continental will provide air suspension systems and tires to NIO’s first mass production car ES8 which is going to be launched by the end of this year.
“We are exciting to be able to partner with Continental on a number of projects, including automated driving, charging, and battery technology,” said William Li, founder and chairman of NIO.
NIO and Continental have been cooperated with each other since 2014 when NIO was established. The two companies said they will partner in areas of brand promotion, product marketing, technology promotion, quality training, customer service and talent training.
An action plan and a strategic alliance will be further discussed and developed, the two companies said.
