Hamburg Summit to address core global issues

TOPICS including digitization, challenges of a European Union without the UK and China’s “Belt and Road” initiative will be presented at the 7th Hamburg Summit, due to open next Wednesday in the German port city.

With this year’s theme of “China meets Europe,” the summit will be attended by the European Commission’s Vice President Jyrki Katainen, Germany’s Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and a Chinese vice premier, according to the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

The new Honorary Chairman of the event will be Germany’s former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

“The summit will serve as a platform for people to discuss challenges and opportunities in such a fast changing world,” said German Consul General in Shanghai Peter Rothen during a media briefing.

Stronger Chinese investment in Germany, especially mergers and acquisitions of high-tech companies, will also be included in the discussions, Rothen said.

Initiated by the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the two-day Hamburg Summit is a major Sino-European economic conference aiming to provide a platform for fair exchange between China and Europe.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang attended the last Hamburg Summit in 2014.

Hamburg is a gateway for Chinese firms to access Europe. More than 550 Chinese companies have offices in Hamburg, making it home to more Chinese businesses than any other European city. More than 700 Hamburg businesses are engaged in trade with China, managing their China-related imports and exports from Hamburg for the whole of Europe.
