Hong bao tradition becomes online trend

SHANGHAI residents are the most fervent hong bao givers as they gave out the most digital red packets through Alipay in the first two days of the Chinese New Year holiday.

More than 100 million people gave an Alipay digital red packet as a gift between February 18 and February 21. On Chinese New Year's Eve as many as 240 million digital hong bao gifts worth a combined 4 billion yuan (US$638.7 million) were sent, Alipay said.

Residents in Hangzhou, Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Nanjing also were keen to give digital red packets.

The most generous red packet givers live in Tianmen City in Hubei Province. The average red packet value in the city was 139 yuan, higher than the average value of 97 yuan given by Wenzhou residents.

Shanghai office worker Jerry said she received several hundred yuan worth of digital hong bao from friends and colleagues during the festival.

"It symbolizes good fortune and it doesn't really matter how much is in each one," she said.
