Hu 3rd on Forbes' most powerful list, Wen debuts at No. 14
US PRESIDENT Barack Obama regained the top spot on Forbes' third annual ranking of "The 70 Most Powerful People In The World." Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is listed No. 2, followed by Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is among 14 newcomers to the list, landing the 14th spot, Forbes said today.
Obama remains the head-of-state of the world's largest and most dynamic economy despite its current weakness and commander-in-chief of the planet's deadliest military, Forbes said. Obama's influence was cemented after al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by US forces.
In the second place is Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who is poised to regain the Russian presidency this year from President Dmitry Medvedev, Forbes said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel ranks fourth and rounding of the top five is Bill Gates, co-chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, chairman of Microsoft and America's richest man. Gates' vaccine-based giving 鈥 closing in on US$6 billion to fight measles, hepatitis B, rotavirus and AIDS, among others 鈥 is part of the largest, most human-driven philanthropy in the history of mankind, according to Forbes.
Completing the Top 10 are Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al Saud (No. 6), Pope Benedict XVI (No. 7), US Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke (No. 8), Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (No. 9) and UK Prime Minister David Cameron (No. 10).
Ten people fell off the list this year due to declining influence, including Oprah Winfrey, disgraced French politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn and former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan. Others departed in a more definitive way, including Apple co-founder Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955 鈥 October 5, 2011) and Osama bin Laden (March 10, 1947 鈥 May 2, 2011).
Four factors were taken into account to select the 70 people that matter from the 7 billion people on the planet: how many people they have power over; the financial resources they control; if they have influence in more than one sphere; and how actively they wield their power to change the world.
