Industry leaders to take stage at WAIC

Averting the digital gap and AI with carbon neutrality will be among the topics that will be discussed at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai next month, officials said yesterday.

Turing Award winners will be among the speakers while academicians, business leaders from Huawei and Qualcomm, and startup officials will share their views at the event. The latest AI developments in sectors like medical, manufacture, autonomous driving and urban management will be on display as well.

The WAIC exhibition halls will stretch over 40,000 square meters in the Pudong New Area and Xuhui District — double that of 2019.

Turing Award winners Joseph Sifakis and Yao Qizhi, “father of Linux” Linus Torvalds, Siemens CEO Roland Busch, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, Huawei’s rotating chairman Ken Hu, as well as leaders from Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu and JD have confirmed their participation for the event.

Besides discussing innovations and business, participants will debate on reliable AI and sustainable development, like AI’s relationship with the environment, privacy and how to avert the digital gap worldwide. Officials with the WHO, UNESCO, ITU and other international organizations will join them in the talks.

AI and the digital upgrade for the city are closely linked. Technology and the city’s development can both be growth engines, said Wu Jincheng, director of Shanghai’s economy and information commission.

The WAIC conference will be held from July 8-10 while the exhibition will open on July 7. More than 300 exhibitors will display exhibits.

A 20-meter AI screen will be showcased while over 10 AI products and innovations will be unveiled. Shanghai has unique advantages to develop the AI industry with resources on data talent and AI application scenes, said Zhu Xiumei, a senior official from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in Shanghai.
