Mainland to send another delegation to Taiwan

The Chinese mainland will send its second purchasing delegation to Taiwan next month after notching up deals worth billions of US dollars early this month, a mainland official said yesterday.

The planned purchasing trip has already attracted more than 60 mainland companies interested in participating in the trip, Yao Jian, a spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce, told a press conference.

The first business delegation, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, included about 80 representatives from 35 companies.

The team signed deals worth more than US$2.2 billion.

Yao said US$827 million of the deals had already been carried out and the remainder of the orders would be carried out by the end of this year.

Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, earlier said business delegations from the Chinese mainland played a positive role in offsetting the effects of the global downturn on Taiwan.
