Ontario seeks to attract top global talent with scholarship
THE government of Ontario in Canada has rolled out a new scholarship program to attract top international talent to their local universities, including an increasing number of students from China, according to the provincial premier.
The new Ontario Trillium Scholarship program, which begins this year, is designed to be cost-shared with participating institutions based on a 2/3 to 1/3 government to institution ratio, according to Philip Wong, Consul of Ontario Economic Affairs.
The OTS will provide C$40,000 per year (US$39,576) over four years to 75 qualified international doctoral students who study at eligible Ontario universities. At maturity, the OTS will provide 300 scholarships to international doctoral students
For the 2011-2012 academic year, 15 Trillium Scholarships for PhD Students will be awarded at the University of Toronto. Academic merit is the defining criterion for the selection of OTS recipients.
Additionally, in the provincial government's Open Ontario plan, it aims to increase the number of international students by 50 percent by 2014-15 and establish Ontario as a global destination of choice for post-secondary education.
