Pirelli looks to new F1 deal despite criticism
ITALY'S Pirelli, the sole tire supplier to Formula One, aims to extend its contract after a three-year deal ends this season.
Its F1 tires have proved controversial this season, attracting criticism from the Red Bull team.
"We are in the process of negotiations with the FIA," Paul Hembery, Pirelli's motorsport director, said in Shanghai, referring to the racing's governing body.
"We have the intention of remaining in F1."
The company said it has benefited considerably from F1 sponsorship, particularly in Asia.
Gregorio Borgo, Pirelli's chief for Asia, said the F1 connection helps Pirelli promote its tires in Asia and maintain its leadership in the premium sector.
Six out of the 19 F1 stops are in Asia this year, including the China Grand Prix last Sunday.
But Borgo declined to provide sales figures for last year, saying they would be available later this year.
Pirelli has recently had to defend its tires, after Red Bull, champions for the past three years, complained about tire wear following the two opening races this year in Australia and Malaysia.
