Private business thrives in Yangpu District

Yangpu District, previously a traditional heavy industrial base in northeast Shanghai, has already become an incubator for local startups and a strong business platform for private enterprises. And some of them have achieved great success.

As a pilot basis selected by “The Ministry of Science and Technology” in 2010, Yangpu district has achieved an occupancy amount of 533 overseas enterprises and obtained more than 6,000 patents. Surrounded by Tongji University, Fudan University and University of Finance and Economics, Yangpu district also takes its advantage of rich education resources, pumps fresh blood continuously into innovative private enterprises.

One case was Sino-US joint venture Ruking Emerson Climate Technologies (Shanghai) Co Ltd, which is headquartered in Wangu Science Park in Yangpu District. It was co-founded on July 1st of 2014 by Ruking Electronics Technology Co Ltd and Emerson Climate Technologies Inc to provide advanced solutions for heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration equipment using modulation capacity to save energy.

“Our competitiveness is primarily derived from the relatively low costs of manufacturing in the Yangpu District and good sales,” said Vice President Lewis Liu who added one device of Ruking Emerson is sold only one third of its competitor’s price.

The venture, of which the Chinese partner owns 60 percent of assets, makes energy-saving hardware for industry giants like Haier, TCL and BOSCH. It was ranked the No.40 by Forbes as small- and medium-sized enterprises of 2008 that have the biggest potential.

Another example is UCloud that established in 2012, which earned one million yuan (US$149,500) per year in its early stage to one million yuan per day now. Today, it has a newly-decorated headquarters with nearly 600 staff in City Concept Park, Yangpu district,

Ji Xinhua, founder and CEO of UCloud used to work in Huawei, Tencent and SNDA, has sufficient experience in internet security. He was invited as an expert to ensure the online security for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

More E-commerce companies are willing to cooperate with UCloud due to its network security and independent principle towards every customer’s background data. Such advantages have appealed companies like Audi, TCL, Yinke and Yongche Inc. etc.

“This year, UCloud has gradually achieved strategic cooperation of hybrid cloud model, traditional enterprises, and state-owned enterprises to expand into the financial and government cloud, in order to become an innovation platform that assists the transformation of traditional companies”, Ji said.

“To hold more private enterprises and startups in the future, outdated steel manufacturing plants in Yangpu district are being transformed into innovative parks”, said Development and Reform Commission of Yangpu district.
