Shanghai鈥檚 CPI growth slows in May

Shanghai's Consumer Price Index expanded 2.3 percent from a year earlier in May, less than April's rise of 2.6 percent but remaining steady, according to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau today.

The slowdown was in line with the national price trend, which also decelerated to a growth of 1.2 percent from 1.5 percent.

Costs of food in Shanghai added 1.8 percent last month, much lower than the gain of 3.3 percent in April. But prices of housing still grew 4.3 percent, more than the pace of 3.8 percent a month earlier.

"Shanghai's consumer prices remained steady," said Li Hui, a researcher with the bureau. "But the prices may pick up in the following months with rise of tobacco tax and more spending on tourism during the upcoming summer holiday."

The country is still facing deflationary pressure due to insufficient domestic demand and a slowing economy.
