Taikang Insurance expands into the healthcare sector

TAIKANG Insurance Group has launched its first tertiary hospital in Nanjing as the insurer expands footprint in the healthcare sector.

The first and second phase of Taikang Xianlin Drum Tower Hospital, affiliated to the Medical School of Nanjing University, covers 400 mu, or 26.67 hectare, and is the only tertiary hospital on the east end of Nanjing.

Taikang spent 5 billion yuan to acquire 80 percent stake in the hospital in 2015 from Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital Group, which runs another tertiary hospital in the downtown Drum Tower area.

The Taikang Xianlin Drum Tower Hospital on Sunday signed a cooperation deal with Mount Sinai Hospital, a US private hospital, in areas of hospital construction, clinical instruction, international conference, and talent development.

The hospital marks a crucial link in Taikang Insurance's strategy to cover health care, life insurance, and elderly care sectors.

Taikang has also started construction of a tertiary hospital in Wuhan City, and operates secondary hospitals along with the insurers' elderly care communities in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou Cities.

Lands have also been ready in Sanya, Wuhan, and Chengdu, and all new projects are expected to start operation by 2020, Taikang said earlier.

The insurer said it would invest a combined 10 billion yuan in medical, healthcare, and elderly care facilities.
