Tencent inks deal to come up with original toys
China maybe the world’s largest toy manufacturing and exporting country, but it has few original brands to rival the global manufacturers, the China Toy & Juvenile Products Association said over the weekend.
China has over 10,000 toy manufacturers with annual production value of 600 billion yuan. Over 70 percent of world’s toys are made in China, Liang Mei, director of the association told the China Toy Expo in Shanghai.
However, most of them are OEM, or original equipment manufacturers, for foreign brands, said Liang.
Many of them are manufacturing same types of toys and even infringed the intellectual property rights of some of the foreign brands and copied their designs, she added.
Internet giant Tencent signed an agreement with the US group, Mattel, the world’s biggest toy manufacturer, to develop a batch of toys based on the penguin logo and other animated figures on the instant message app QQ.
Tencent aims to develop a Chinese Intellectual Property named QQ Family, said Li Dan, marketing general manager for Tencent’s social network business.
Some hi-tech and intelligent toys will be developed along with animated cartoon movies based on the QQ Family figures next year, Li said.
