UK leads in partnership with China in innovation

Government officials and industry leaders called for deeper collaboration between China and UK in the science and technology field as a UK-China innovation showcase was staged during the Pujiang Innovation Forum on Friday.

Martyn Roper, Charge d’Affaires at the British Embassy Beijing said: "Science and innovation partnership in the center of the golden era of UK and China relationship."

The two countries have been tackling global challenges and developing new technologies to drive future global growth as UK overtook Japan in 2011 to become China's second largest science partner in terms of co-publications.

"We hope to learn from experiences and that more connections and conversations would flourish into successful partnership in the future," he said.

Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang told the keynote speech that China would continue to seek an open and transparent environment for innovation and to diversify and deepen dialogues in the innovation field with the UK.

"’The showcase is expected to bring us more understanding of UK's innovative industry and further expand the partnership and exchange between the two countries," he said. Both countries have made significant progress in collaborative projects such as climate science and services, healthcare, education, etc.

Wan Gang and Jo Johnson, Minister of State for Universities, Science, Research and Innovation, also co-chaired the 8th UK-China Joint Commission on Science, Technology and Innovation to decide the priority fields to drive collaboration and key areas for government support in the future.

"We shall strive for a platinum age for UK China relationship through our continuous efforts in the collaboration in the science and technology," he said.

A number of sub forums featuring key industry sectors identified by the UK-China Joint Commission on Science, Technology and Innovation such as new energy, creative industry, digital manufacturing was also held yesterday.

UK and China collaboration projects have span across university, academia, businesses policy makers.

Chairman Shou Ziqi at the Science and Technology commission of Shanghai Municipality added that it's only through innovation and collaboration can drive further technology and industry revolution.

A UK China joint innovative research programs worth more than £50 million to tackle global issues like climate change, long-term renewable energy supplies and human diseases was announced in 2014 and a wider 5-year implementation plan which will eventually include deals worth a total of £200 million through 2019.
