US$114b transactions on mini programs
TOTAL transactions generated through Tencent WeChat鈥檚 mini programs exceeded 800 billion yuan (US$114.3 billion) in 2019, a jump of 160 percent year on year.
Mini programs are lightweight apps from other developers but run inside WeChat and they don鈥檛 need to be downloaded or upgraded through app stores.
The average number of mini programs accessed by users nearly doubled and the average time to access mini programs increased 45 percent, with the peak period around lunch and after dinner.
Mini games have also attracted users 鈥 and females make up half of the players.
Furthermore, WeChat founder Allen Zhang said nearly a million users had reached the limit of contacts 鈥 5,000 鈥 each can have, and the company was considering raising the limit.
鈥淓ven though these WeChat contacts might not be real 鈥榝riends,鈥 we鈥檙e pushed to raise that limit,鈥 Zhang said yesterday.
鈥淲e鈥檙e still deliberating on that exact number and are still uncertain over the impact this might bring,鈥 he told developers in a video message.
Meanwhile, WeChat鈥檚 public accounts, which allow users to post and send articles to other WeChat users, might also be altered a bit to allow shorter articles and include other media types as well.
WeChat Work unveiled a new version to help enterprises improve efficiency. It now serves more than 2.5 million companies and has 60 million monthly active users.
