British Car Output In April Plunges 55%

BRITISH car output last month plunged 55 percent from a year ago as demand collapsed amid the recession, but the industry is hoping for a boost from a government-backed incentive to trade in old cars, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said.

Output totaled 68,258 cars last month, with 82 percent of that exported.

For the first four months of this year, car production dived 56 percent, and commercial vehicle production slumped 64 percent, the society said.

Buyers who trade in a car more than 10 years old are offered discounts of US$3,000.
