Car makers offer discounts to lure buyers

CAR makers are eager to offer price discounts and incentives to lure consumers after vehicles sales slowed down since April.

Li Jiayue, a sales director of Shanghai Volkswagen Hudong outlet, said the first quarter sales boom is an extension of last year's blowout and discounts were set in April before the off-peak season for car sales.

"The store traffic has dropped a little bit since May, " he said. "Previously auto buyers were willing to pay extra money to get earlier delivery but now they prefer to wait and see for lower prices."

China's overall auto car sales rose 34 percent in April from a year earlier. But sales fell nearly 10 percent from March figures, according to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Most car makers wrapped up production since the second half of last year to cope with an unexpectedly large sales growth of 46 percent for 2009.

However, the market has cooled as the central government winds down incentives and fuel prices have risen.
