Charge of 'new wave' of electric cars to roll
A "new wave" of new-energy vehicles requiring a complex control, sensor and satellite guidance system is expected to boost the auto electronic industry in China, industry officials said during a forum yesterday.
The industry is forecast to grow 24 percent to 260 billion yuan (US$38.2 billion) this year and to touch 300 billion yuan in 2015, said Shao Zhiqing, vice director of the Shanghai Municipal Economy and Information Technology Development Commission.
"It's a new wave of new-energy cars coming, and we should prepare for it," Shao said during the 6th China International Automotive Electronics and Testing Show and Summit held yesterday in Shanghai.
More than 500,000 new-energy cars are expected to be sold within two or three years in China, with sales of 1 million in 2015, said Chen Qingquan, chairman of the World Electric Vehicle Association.
Each electric car requires complicated internal control, security, communications and sensor as well as guidance system which presents a huge potential market for electronic and semiconductor firms, Chen said. He expected electric vehicles to contribute 10 percent to the total vehicle sales in the country in 2020.
