China’s passenger cars sales up 8.9% last month

CHINA’S passenger car sales grew 8.9 percent year on year to 1.5 million units in February, driven by the rise of sport-utility vehicles, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association yesterday.

Sales of SUVs reached 622,411 units in February, up 29.2 percent from the same time last year, the data showed.

Sales of sedans shed 0.3 percent to 674,804 units and sales of multi-purpose vehicles declined 9.1 percent to 151,034 units last month, the association said.

Sales of new-energy vehicles reached 16,500 units last month, tripling from 5,400 units in January. The association forecast that sales of new energy vehicles will grow rapidly in the second quarter this year, due to the increase of registration for new car plates of new-energy vehicles.

The association also forecast B-class SUVs are going to be another contributor to passenger car sales. Chinese domestic carmakers reported good performance on B-class SUV segment, with outperformers such as Changan CS95, Great Wall H7 and Trumpchi GS8, the association said.
