鈥楧riverless鈥 cars embark on road test
TWO “driverless” cars produced by China’s Chang’an Automobile yesterday set off on a 2,000-kilometer test drive from Chongqing to Beijing.
Li Yusheng, chief engineer at Chang’an Automobile Engineering & Research Institute, said the drive will help test the cars in diverse conditions.
“The vehicles have performed well in uncomplicated conditions ... but they still need the help of a driver to navigate in places like gas stations and toll booths,” he said.
Tan Benhong, the institute’s deputy director, said: “We want to improve the vehicles’ sensors and processing technology.”
Chang’an aims to put the cars into commercial use in 2018.
Chinese automakers BAIC Group, GAC Group, SAIC Motor and BYD are also developing autonomous cars.
