Ford China chalks up 7% sales increase in 2011

FORD Motor Corp said its China sales broke the half-million milestone last year, boosted mainly by the sales of Mondeo sedans and Transit light commercial vehicles.

The US carmaker delivered 519,390 vehicles to the Chinese market last year, a 7 percent increase from 2010. A total of 49,238 Ford vehicles were sold in December, up 10 percent year-on-year as demand surged.

Ford's performance in 2011 is expected to beat the industry average, which began to fall after the government rolled back incentives for buyers of compact vehicles.

"Ford expects sustainable growth moving forward in China," said David Schoch, chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China.

The US auto maker earlier said it would introduce 15 new models to China by 2015.

"To keep up with market demand, Ford together with its partners are currently adding four new plants in China, including a vehicle assembly plant in Chongqing that will come online in 2012," Schoch added.

Ford's passenger vehicle joint venture, Chang'an Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA), sold 320,658 vehicles in 2011, compared with 304,104 last year.

Ford Mondeo set a sales record in December the second month in a row, selling 8,095 units, up 76 percent from last year - the highest number sold since Mondeo was introduced to China in 2007.

Ford's commercial vehicle subsidiary in China, Jiangling Motors Corporation, reported a 9 percent increase in sales last year to 194,588 units. It was driven by a growing demand for Ford Transit. A total of 58,595 Ford Transit vehicles were sold last year, up 12 percent from 2010.
