GM drives to post record sales in China in May

GENERAL Motors drove to its highest sales in China last month when the US auto giant and its joint ventures sold 21.3 percent more vehicles than in the same month a year earlier.

They sold a record 231,183 vehicles in China in May.

Shanghai GM sold 99,113 units, up 7.1 percent from a year earlier, while SAIC-GM-Wuling delivered 127,749 units, an annual surge of 35.9 percent. But sales of FAW-GM dipped 0.7 percent year on year to 3,756 units.

Sales of GM's Buick brand fell 1.2 percent on an annual basis in May to 51,360 units, but sales of Buick Excelle jumped 19 percent to 23,085 units last month. The Buick Excelle was the best seller in China's sedan sector in April.

Sales of GM's Chevrolet in May hit the highest level when they rose 13.1 percent year on year to 48,563 units, with orders for the Chevrolet Cruze soaring 34 percent to 18,977 units.

Cadillac, GM's luxury car brand, posted a 2.2 percent fall in sales to 2,205 units in May.

The China Passenger Car Association will release May's industry figures tomorrow.
