Hummer Joint production denied
SICHUAN Tengzhong and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp yesterday both denied media reports saying they would cooperate to produce Hummer sport utility vehicles in China.
Sichuan Tengzhong, a little-known heavy machinery maker, which finalized the deal to buy General Motors Co's Hummer business in October, has reportedly approached SAIC to jointly produce and sell Hummer vehicles in China, Beijing Times said yesterday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Tengzhong responded that it didn't contact SAIC on the issue and a spokeswoman for SAIC, the Chinese partner of GM, also said the company has never heard of the issue and had no such intention.
Sichun Tengzhong, which proposed to buy the Hummer brand for about US$150 million, has yet to win approval from the Chinese government for the purchase.
