Lighter is the trend for future cars
NEW material and lightweight design will be more widely adopted in cars since 2018, which makes car manufacture flexible and easier, Shanghai Daily learned during the the Auto Shanghai Show.
Carbon fiber is expected to become alternative new material used in vehicles within three to five years, instead of metals, to offer lightweight design and better driving experiences.
Lightweight design, digitalization and sustainability have become major trends in the auto market. High performance carbon fiber, which is now used in racing cars, will be more widely adopted since 2018, thanks to the decreased cost and smart manufacture development, said Zhong Yu, chairman of Kangde Group, a new material firm.
Kangde, which offers new material to more than 30 car firms like SAIC, Chang'an and BMW now, expected lightweight material and design to become “killer application” with advantages like flexible possibility, easy assembly and about 50 percent of weight reduction.
The cost of carbon fiber is expected to drop dramatically and be closer to the cost of Aluminum by 2018.
