Mercedes-Benz Star Fund launched in China
MERCEDES-BENZ (China) Ltd announced the establishment of Mercedes-Benz Star Fund, creating a new landmark in the car maker's charity activities with the aim to make more profound and positive contributions to Chinese society.
The Mercedes-Benz Star Fund, which is in partnership with the China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF), has a start-up figure of 30 million yuan (US$4.41 million).
It has special significance for the legendary German car producer as this is Mercedes-Benz's largest start-up amount for a charity fund worldwide and first charity fund in collaboration with nationwide dealers.
"Today's launch is another milestone as we stand at the starting line of a new chapter in our CSR journey in China. With the new Mercedes-Benz Star Fund, we are excited to reinforce this sustained commitment to social causes in China ? and even better, taking it to a new height," said Ulrich Walker, chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia, during the launch event.
Under the slogan of "Nurturing the World of Tomorrow," the Mercedes-Benz Star Fund is the company's most comprehensive corporate social responsibility program ever, integrating five core pillars including environmental protection, education, music, arts and sports, charity and disaster relief as well as culture of driving. Each of these pillars is strategically supported by key community programs that the company partners with respective authoritative organizations to implement in China.
Explaining the rationale behind these five focus areas, Klaus Maier, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz (China) Ltd, said: "We chose these five pillars as they are in line with societal needs to help the community and underprivileged in China. Whether it is to protect the nature or for music education, the rise in the nation's continuous efforts to groom young sporting talents or even disaster relief and recovery contribution, our programs are aligned with the needs of the society. These areas also require continuous attention and long-term support for the building of a harmonious society."
"We are a strong advocate of the values of social responsibility, human progress and development, and the pursuit of excellence in everything that we do ?? which are in perfect match with Mercedes-Benz's CSR values," said Tu Meng, Secretary-General of CYDF, partner of the Mercedes-Benz Star Fund.
During the launch ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Wednesday, a new initiative under the fund, Mercedes-Benz "Inspiring the Future" Project Hope Happy Music Classroom Program, was launched to bring children in rural areas a step closer to their musical dream.
The car maker will donate to build 125 Hope School Music Classrooms, furnishing them with facilities including musical instruments, educational materials, etc. Furthermore, school teachers will also receive proper training. It is estimated that about 40,000 children will benefit from the 4.3 million yuan program.
This program comes at an opportune time to address the gap in music education between urban and rural regions. Many children living in rural areas have musical talent but lack access to proper music instruments and education. With this, the children will be able to uncover their potential in music and benefit from an all-round development.
"Music is a source of hope and inspiration for our children ?? who are our hope for the future. As a new initiative under our Mercedes-Benz Star Fund, we are delighted to bring the gift and joy of music into the hearts of these Hope School children. We look forward to seeing many more young talents realize their music dreams," said Maier.
At the ceremony, famous Chinese singing group Yu Quan gave a live performance of the program's theme song and was joined by children from the Hope School.
In fact, this initiative adds to the company's long track record of engaging in CSR activities in China. Mercedes-Benz and its parent company, Daimler, have engaged in various social responsibility programs throughout the years.
For instance, Daimler raised 5.1 million yuan to support the construction of Mercedes-Benz Elementary School in Shifang after the devastating Sichuan earthquake. The total donation to projects in Sichuan amounted to 10 million yuan. Furthermore, the company and its partners also pledged 5 million yuan to the relief efforts in recent Yushu earthquake.
In nature protection, the car maker launched a Green Legacy Program with a total donation of 14 million yuan, helping the protection of World Heritage Sites in China with UNESCO, including the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, South China Karst, Mount Lushan, etc. Mercedes-Benz also actively promotes music and supports sports development among the community by partnering with the National Center for the Performing Arts for the Weekend Concert Series and holding the "Swing for Starts" junior tennis development program with the China Tennis Association.
Daimler has also been active in working with top institutions, including Peking University, Tsinghua University and Tongji University, on scholarship programs as well as hosting career development forum with well-known scholars, professors, and business elites.
On their continued commitment, Walker said: "China holds a special place in the hearts of Daimler and Mercedes-Benz. Our CSR approach remains firm and comprehensive. We are indeed privileged to witness its fast expansion and proud to grow with China."
"With these developments in CSR, this is a stamp of our joint commitment to China and to the well-being of the Chinese society," he added.
