Shanghai Volkswagen enjoys 50% sales jump

SHANGHAI Volkswagen Co said its sales for May jumped more than 50 percent through direct marketing.

The sales volume through direct marketing reached 59,754 units last month, up 56.8 percent from the same period last year. This was a slight drop compared to the sales volume of 60,425 units in April, a record high.

Shanghai Volkswagen was the third-largest passenger car manufacturer in China last year, selling 436,000 units, trailing only FAW Volkswagen and Shanghai General Motors.

Government incentives, including cutting in half the purchase tax on new cars with engines of 1.6 liters or less as well as offering subsidies to vehicle buyers in rural areas, helped revived the industry.

Ford Motor Corp reported a 33 percent increase in Chinese sales in April while General Motors Corp sales surged 50 percent in the same period.

Volkswagen's Lavida Langyi sold 14,968 units and the new Passat Lingyu sold more than 8,800 last month.
