Toyota eyes sales target with launch of new cars
Toyota will roll out new car models to lift sales and it is confident of meeting its full-year growth target despite another year-on-year monthly sales slump in August.
The world’s largest carmaker by sales suffered a 4.2 percent month-on-month fall in deliveries to 72,100 units last month on top of the 3.5-percent drop in China sales for July.
Toyota’s combined sales in the past eight months totaled 564,600 units, down 5.3 percent from a year earlier.
But Niu Yu, head of corporate communication of Toyota China, claimed it was normal for the company’s sales to fall last month because its target customers delayed their purchases ahead of the launch of its restyled hot-selling sport-utility vehicle RAV4 last week.
He said this model, together with the revamped Vios and Yaris small cars to be released in the fourth quarter, will ensure Toyota achieve its goal of 900,000 cars this year. The goal marks a 7 percent annual growth, he added.
Toyota China may see a substantial monthly increase in sales during the remaining four months as it banks on its strong product portfolio this year and a relatively week performance in the same period of last year, he added.
Sales of Toyota and other Japanese carmakers dived by double-digits last September amid a Sino-Japanese row over the Diaoyu Islands which sparked a nationwide boycott of Japanese goods.
