Porsche harks back to past in Boxter model
PORSCHE has given its roadster a new power series and a new name — the 718 Boxster. It welcomes back the brand’s tradition of a mid-engine, flat-four car with newly enhanced efficiency. The car is now available for test-driving in Shanghai.
The tradition was built partly on the heritage of the Porsche 718, the winner of Targa Florio car rally in 1959 and 1960. It was the car that once caused a sensation both on the track and on the road. Today, that tradition has been reintroduced with turbo-charging technology that proves effective in downsizing an engine without compromising its performance.
These days, even fuel-insensitive sports carmakers are having second thoughts about their love affair with bigger engines because they are not necessarily the more powerful ones.
The 2.0-liter engine in the 718 Boxster has its torque increased to 310 Nm, 30 Nm more than the 2.7-liter one in the outgoing version. The 718 Boxster S replaces its 3.4-liter engine with a 2.5 one. It uses variable turbine geometry to improve responsiveness at low engine speeds and provide a high maximum power output.
