Amazon to unveil new service for Chinese
AMAZON.COM’S anticipated new service allowing Chinese consumers to directly buy products from its overseas websites in local language and pay in yuan will start early next month to heat up a buying spree around November 11, a peak season for China’s e-commerce industry.
Amazon yesterday said it will offer direct delivery service for Chinese consumers who buy products on six overseas Amazon sites — the United States, Germany, Spain, France, Britain and Italy — covering 80 million products such as clothes, sportswear, kid goods, shoes, cosmetics and health care next month.
But consumers still need to pay tax and delivery fees for the products.
Similar to Cyber Monday in the West, the November 11 Singles Day, first developed by Alibaba.com, sees Chinese people buying greatly discounted products online.
“Amazon’s new service will boost online shopping of imported goods in China because people need high-quality and reliable products, especially in food and kid categories,” said Lin Wenbin, researcher of Analysys International, an IT research firm.
The market for Chinese online shopping of imported goods will surge to 120 billion yuan (US$19.6 billion) in 2014, a jump of 50 percent from a year earlier, according to Beijing-based Analysys.
Amazon earlier said facilities will be set up in Shanghai’s free trade zone to sell products from abroad to Chinese consumers paying in yuan.
