City’s online shoppers tend to be younger, females, have modest incomes
YOUNG and middle-aged consumers and people with a monthly income under 5,000 yuan (US$815) are the most active online shoppers in Shanghai, the local statistics bureau said in a survey today.
Over half of the 751 Shanghai residents surveyed by the Shanghai Statistics Bureau had made purchases from online merchants. Almost two-thirds of the respondents were younger people between 16 to 40 years old, and 29 percent were middle-aged consumers between 41 and 60, the bureau said in its latest survey conducted via telephone.
People with a monthly income under 5,000 yuan favored online shopping more than others, mainly due to convenience and bargains. They accounted for about two-thirds of the online shoppers that were surveyed. Only 8 percent of the consumers had a monthly income over 10,000 yuan.
More middle-aged people agreed that “it’s harder to deal with online merchants in disputes.” And there’s no clear relationship between consumers’ incomes level and their satisfaction levels regarding resolution of disputes with online merchants.
Women are more enthusiastic about online shopping than men.
Sixty percent of online consumers have spent less than 500 yuan a month in the last year. Only 6 percent spent more than 30,000 yuan in 2013 on the Internet, showing that consumers are taking a cautious stance regarding online shopping, the bureau said.
