Coke builds new green plant in Heilongjiang

THE Coca-Cola Co yesterday started construction of a new environmentally friendly plant in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province as part of its plan to grow in one of the world’s most populous countries.

The 200,000-square-meter plant, which is located in the New South Harbin Industrial City, is designed to set up 9 production lines for both sparkling and still beverages, including Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Minute Maid, and Ice Dew, the company said.

Upon completion, the total investment will exceed US$100 million, with an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons of beverages. The first phase of the new plant is targeted to be put into operation in 2016, according to Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola currently has a plant in Heilongjiang, which was established in 1995. Its capacity has been fully utilized and the company is expanding production to meet the fast-growing demand of local consumers. The existing plant has 3 bottling lines with an annual production of up to 190,000 tons.

Coca-Cola has announced plans to invest US$4 billion in China between 2012 and 2014. The new Heilongjiang plant will adopt green building standards and enforce the international certification system requirement for the Silver Certification of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
