East China Fair eyes N. America event
THE East China Fair, the country’s biggest regional trade show, may host an exhibition in North America this year in a trial to directly tap overseas markets to lift exports, the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said yesterday.
“We have enhanced efforts to raise the fair’s awareness in the United States, Canada and Europe, hoping to attract more foreign buyers to attend the fair this year,” said Shen Weihua, vice chairman of the commission.
“We found consumer demand in the North America region strong and it prompted the idea of hosting an exhibition directly in foreign markets,” Shen said.
He also said the fair hopes to draw visitors from other countries instead of just “from nearby countries like Japan, South Korea and India.”
Shen said the first foreign trade show under the East China Fair may be held in September but the specific location has yet to be decided.
The East China Fair, initiated in 1991, has become a harbinger for the country’s trade outlook. It is supported by the Ministry of Commerce, and co-organized by related government departments from Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces as well as Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo.
The five-day fair will start next Tuesday at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area.
Products ranging from clothing, household appliances, digital products and gifts will be displayed at the fair.
