Fonterra apologizes for China milk powder scare

New Zealand’s Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, today apologized for a milk powder contamination scare in China, one of its largest markets.

Fonterra Chief Executive Officer Theo Spierings said at a media briefing in Beijing that it will work closely with authorities to resolve the issue.

The company reported over the weekend that some of its exported whey protein products may contain clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that can cause botulism, which affects the nervous and respiratory systems.

Spierings said the company will submit a detailed explanation of what went wrong to Chinese regulators early this week.

Chinese authorities have suspended imports of Fonterra-produced whey powder and dairy base powder, and increased inspection and supervision at the border for New Zealand dairy products.

Chinese importers have started to recall and seal products with Fonterra whey protein.
