History and luxury meet on the Bund
SHANGHAI'S historic Bund area boasts a new landmark with the official opening of the Waldorf Astoria's first hotel in China yesterday.
The complex, comprising a century-old grand heritage building called the "Waldorf Astoria Club," which previously housed the renowned Shanghai Club, and a sparkling new tower annex, is a joint investment by Shanghai Jiushi Corp and Jinjiang International Group.
"We have chosen Shanghai for our first Waldorf Astoria hotel in China as it is one of the world's leading cities, with a strong influence over finance, commerce, fashion and culture," said Christopher J. Nassetta, president and CEO of Hilton Worldwide which owns the luxury brand.
"The continuing flow of international arrivals into Shanghai as well as growing sophistication of local travellers have also created a huge appetite for world-class luxury accommodation in one of China's most populous cities," he said.
Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund opened the Waldorf Astoria Club, which comprises 20 luxurious suites, in August last year and the new Waldorf Astoria Tower building, offering 252 rooms and suites, was formally unveiled yesterday.
Hilton Worldwide operates 17 hotels and resorts under four brands in China - Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, Hilton and Double Tree by Hilton. Over 60 properties under its brands are being developed in China.
