Infant food protein contaminated

WHEY protein imported by the infant products manufacturer Beingmate Group Co Ltd and Hangzhou-based Wahaha Health Food Co Ltd was discovered to be contaminated by enterobacter sakazakii, a potentially fatal bacteria for infants that can cause bacteraemia, meningitis and necrotising enterocolitis, according to the state quality watchdog.

A total of 37 tons of whey protein imported by Beingmate from the United States and 5.2 tons Wahaha imported from New Zealand were tainted with the bacteria, according to a blacklist of 159 substandard or inferior imported food or cosmetics released by General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine yesterday.

All the products on the list were rejected or destroyed and none of them would be sold in domestic markets, said the Website of the administration.

Beingmate said the product was imported in December but was tested and found to be tainted and had never been used in its products.

All Beingmate materials are tested and all its products in stores are safe, it added.
