Kohler opens kitchen cabinets factory in Changshu
UNITED States-based Kohler Co opened its first China factory for kitchen cabinets today in Changshu, Jiangsu Province.
Kohler has spent more than US$20 million in the 100,000-square-meter factory and planned to invest further in a second phase as sales of kitchen cabinets have grown rapidly. A research and development center for kitchen products will also be established in Changshu, the first kitchen research facility in the world.
"China's kitchen cabinet market has been one of the fastest growing in Asia Pacific and continues to mature," said Derrick Tay, president of Kohler kitchen & bath for Asia Pacific.
"With consumers increasing recognition and need for kitchen cabinets, Kohler has made an investment on a large scale in our research, development and production"
The company earlier opened a two-story Kohler Kitchen showroom in Shanghai, the biggest in China, to establish consumer recognition of its kitchen business.
Kohler's kitchen business, which has a history of over 40 years, entered China in 2007. It now operates more than 30 outlets across the country, mainly in eastern China.
"We planned to open more outlets to bring the total number to 50 by the end of this year as the orders for kitchen products have been increasing significantly," said Sidney Cheung, general manager of Cabinetry for Kohler China.
Cheung added the company will launch new products soon after the debut of its "Pro" and "Arch" series.
The country's kitchen cabinet market could reach 50 billion yuan before 2010, according to China Building Decoration Association.
