LED TVs to boost rebound in industry

CHINA'S television manufacturing industry will rebound in the second half this year, thanks to the fast growing flat panel sector and particularly LED TVs, according to an industry report.

The LED TV market will grow rapidly to account for 18 percent of the domestic TV market by 2012 from less than 10 percent now, according to the report by the China Video Industry Association and All View Consulting.

Network TVs, which allow consumers to download from the Internet, will be the rage and bring new opportunities to TV makers helping them win back market share from personal computers, according to the report.

TV makers sold 15.11 million units in the first six months, a 20-percent decline from the same period a year ago due to plunging sales of cathode ray tube TVs, which sank 58 percent on an annual basis.

But the performance still exceeded industry expectations as the market has clearly recovered in the second quarter from slowing demand as a result of the government's massive stimulus measures, including subsidies to farmers to purchase appliances and refunds on replacement of old units, said the report.

The sales of flat panel TVs, including LCD and LED TVs, jumped 58.3 percent to 9.78 million units in the first six months as flat panel TVs penetrated quickly in the rural areas.

The report also revealed that domestic manufacturers took a whopping 80 percent share of the domestic TV market in the first half of this year.

Domestic TV giants, including Skyworth, Hisense and Konka, have also set up production lines to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and reduce costs, the report said.
