Macau to continue to regulate gaming

THE government of Macau Special Administrative Region will continue to regulate the pace and scale of development in the local gaming sector despite increasing revenues, its chief executive said in his 2011 policy address yesterday.

Fernando Chui Sai On said the government will tighten control over the number of newly established casinos, gaming tables and slot machines in the coming years, and strengthen supervision over the operations of local casinos, especially the auditing of the casino operators' accounting records.

Macau, the only place in China where gambling is legal, has previously set a limit of 5,500 on the number of gaming tables over the next three years.

Last year, Macau reaped a total of 120 billion patacas (US$15.4 billion) in gross revenues from its gaming sector. The figure has already reached 152.11 billion patacas from January to October this year, surging by 58.8 percent over last year.
