Recession is sweet for chocolate maker Cadbury
CANDY maker Cadbury Plc nearly tripled net profit in the first half as people ate more chocolate.
The company, which also makes Dentyne gum and Halls and Bassett's candies, said net profit was 313 million pounds (US$513 million), compared to 113 million pounds in the same period a year earlier.
Sales of chocolate surged 13 percent in the second quarter.
Chocolate and candies had been expected to benefit from people enjoying themselves at home rather than going out during the recession, Cadbury said.
Cadbury's profit included 234 million pounds from the demerger of its Americas Beverages business and the disposal of its Australia Beverages business.
